Officiating Speech by Dato' Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS
The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) hosted the Creative Content Conference, which commenced on the 27th August in conjunction with KL Converge! 2015. The conference was officiated by the Director General of FINAS, Dato’ Kamil Othman at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
This year, FINAS invited 12 local and international speakers such as Ahmad Izham Omar, CEO of Media Prima Berhad; Haniza Ros Nasarudin, CMO of MYTV; Chau Nha-Uyen, CEO of Looking Glass (Australia); Sridhar Sreekakula, President of Barking Cow Media Group (USA); Fathi Azouz, Director of Original Content - OSN (UAE) and many more to address 5 key topics in today’s creative content industry namely: ‘The Landscape of the Creative Content Industry,’ ‘The Future of Broadcasting in Malaysia – Digital TV,’ ‘Pitching Centre Incentives,’ ‘Filming Opportunities in Malaysia’ and ‘Creating Content that Travels.’
Ahmad Izham Omar started the ball rolling by introducing ‘The Landscape of the Creative Content Industry’ where he pointed out “You don’t represent your viewers, each and every one of them is different. Thus, broadcaster who has all the demographics will survive.” He continued with a discussion on ‘The Future of Broadcasting in Malaysia – Digital TV’ with Haniza Ros Nasarudin where both discussed on the relevance of linear TV and they came to a conclusion where the viewers will get the best of both worlds in quality linear TV with the best in class on-demand TV services in the future.
Next in line was Faridah Jaafar, Director of FINAS with her topic on ‘Pitching Centre Incentives’ where she presented various available funds such as Co-Production Fund, Development Fund and more. She highlighted that the pitching centre was established to stimulate creative content in the country and those with ideas – whether in the areas of film, television, music, online videos, mobile apps, and others – can seek for financial support from the centre. During the ‘Filming Opportunities in Malaysia’ discussion, the guests thanked the pitching centre for providing the opportunities and support for them to create their content and recommended every one with creative ideas and contents to pitch for the various available funds.
The last topic, ‘Creating Content that Travels’ was spearheaded by Marini Ramlan, Head of Content Innovation Team and Digital at Primeworks Studios. She said, “In creating content that travels, you need to know the audience and always fit into the market you’re going for.” Her sentiment was echoed by the rest of the panels which added that a good story and relatable characters – no matter in which languages – will still attract the viewers. At the conclusion of each panel discussion, Dato’ Mohd Mahyidin Mustakim, CEO of CCAM gave each presenter a token of appreciation to acknowledge their participation in the conference.
