Dato’ Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) officiated the first ASEAN-Japan Television Festival 2015 on 9th September 2015 at Berjaya Times Square Hotel and Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The festival is organised by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM), through Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) with the collaboration of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication Japan, as an initiative to cultivate collaboration and co-production among the ASEAN countries and Japan.

During his officiating speech, Dato’ Jailani Johari, said that he foresees the festival to be a catalyst for the positive initial move towards the expanding of international co-production and TV programs exchange.

He added, “This is also in line with one of the four pillars of the ASEAN Economic Community in enhancing ASEAN’s integration into the globalized economy. Nevertheless, a right measure of strategic marketing need to be meted out to safeguard and sustain the benefits of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRS) for creative content industry and new media for online distribution across regions.”

Recognising the creative industry as a future economic growth sector, he applauds the initiative since the country has accomplished significant achievements in the implementation of the National Creative Industry Policy in Malaysia. Within a short span of four years, the creative industry has grew from 1.27 percent in 2011 to 5.7 percent currently, contributing more than RM18 billon to the National Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

The festival was hoped to become a benchmark for other ASEAN countries to emulate to ensure that similar smart-collaboration could be sustained by producing quality programs for exchange to meet the increasing aspirations of our diverse audiences across the region.
