The Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games 2015 featured the who’s who in the industry, with speakers from Pixar, Disney Animation, Dreamworks, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Rhythm & Hues, Framestore, Double Negative, Valve, Epic, SEGA, Lionhead, Naughty Dog, Ubisoft, Media Molecule and UDON Entertainment.

During his keynote session, Gary Napper, Lead Game Designer, Sega/Creative Assembly who has the expertise in creating game concepts, core gameplay and detailed systems design touched upon the importance of networking in games. He noted: “Learn about people, what they do and what they are looking for because even if you have the best portfolio in the world it might not be suited the project that you are joining. So do as much research as you can, meet as many people and always be prepared.”

Most recently Gary was Lead Designer on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 before coming to Creative Assembly to join the A:I team. He is responsible for a large part of the game design including many core mechanics, world interactions, system designs and AI behaviours.

Next speaker that really captured the audiences’ heart was Abdul Khaliq (Alitt), the current Art Director for EA Ghost which is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Alitt manages over 220 people in 6 studios throughout Asia and Europe. Based on his vast experience working within the industry, he believes that more women should join the games industry as developers and game artists. Noting on the fast growing dynamics of the industry, he remarked on the male-dominated industry saying, “Women can do even better than men in this industry itself.”

Vincent Seritella from Pixar talks extensively on the importance of visual effects. Seritella reiterated, “Good visual effects will surely captivate the audience”.  Serritella developed award winning effects on ‘Spiderman 2’ and was nominated for Outstanding Effects in an Animated Motion Picture for ‘Beowulf’, in the 2008 VES Awards. He is currently at Pixar Animation Studios where he recently completed work on ‘Inside Out’ and is currently finishing effects for ‘The Good Dinosaur.’

The Animex 2015 was jointly organised by KDU University College and the University of Teesside, supported by MyGameDev, sponsored by ECMLibra Foundation and RHB, partnered with the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and MSI.
