KUALA LUMPUR, 1 DECEMBER 2015. - Malaysia's very own prima donna, actress and singer, Mariam Ismail or affectionately known as Mariani died of colon cancer at 7:32pm at her family’s residence in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. She was 82. Mariani had been admitted to a medical center due to health problems before.
Her youngest daughter, Melissa Saila, 43, who is also an actress and director, said their mother slipped into a coma at 6am but was conscious for a while before breathing her last breath.
Born in Tanjung Pagar, Singapore, on April 20, 1933, Mariani was the older sister of the late Puan Sri Saloma. Her acting career began after winning a beauty contest in the year of 1951 in Singapore, when she was 17-years-old. She starred in over over 100 films and drama such as Istana Impian, Kembali Seorang, Labu Labi, Nasib Labu-Labi, Tiga Abdul, Putus Sudah Kasih Sayang and Masam-Masam Manis. Mariani also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the film industry at the Malaysia Film Festival in 2013.
Prime Minister Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak said her acting in the films she starred in were still fresh in his memory.
"I still remember her remarkable acting in films like Labu Labi and many others. May Allah bless her soul. Al-Fatihah," he said.
The late Mariani married three times and lived close to her children, Melissa Saila, Rozita Rohaizad and Iskandar Mierza.
