Dato' Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS suggested that Malaysia needs its own National Film Theatre, at the monthly event 'Tanya KP FINAS,' organised by the Content Malaysia Pitching Centre last Friday.
The National Film Theatre will emphasise on screening local films and occasionally foreign films, so that local films will always be in demand. As FINAS plans to have a grading system for the locally made films starting this year, the theatre can be an alternative platform for those who do not pass the Compulsory Screening Scheme (Skim Wajib Tayang) for mandatory screening at the cinemas.
That is not all, the theatre will provide a platform for indie or smaller films to be screened. For example, the BFI Southbank in London that specialises in screening classic, contemporary, indie, local, and non-English language films.
The idea was received well by the full-house audiences and Dato’'Kamil strongly believes that the theatre will elevate the local film industry further in the future.
