A Malaysian indie short film titled 'Coofie & Sexy Dress' has garnered 5 Official Selections in various International Film Festival since its debut in 2015, namely the Cannes Court Métrage (France); Gwanju International Film Festival (South Korea); Golden Diana International Film Festival (Austria); Slum Film Festival (Kenya); and most recently Chennai International Short Film Festival (India) in January.
The idea for the short film came to Ella Royantty when she was studying for her Master of Fine Arts in 2014 at The School of Motion Pictures & Television in San Francisco, as her professor suggested that she produced a Malaysian short film. After extensive research and discussions, she teamed up with Mel Brannon, an American scriptwriter to draft the script. 'Coofie & Sexy Dress' is about a panicked and frustrated family man who has found himself in debt to a relentless loan shark, and must find a way to pay his debt or face the ruthless consequences.
Besides Brannon, she collaborated with Jaemin Park, a Korean director for her first short film as recommended by her advisor. To date, Park has directed several short films and his work was often chosen as an Official Selection by various international film festivals. While the short film was a collaboration with foreign writer and director, Ella said she had always envisioned it to be a Malaysian film. Hence, she translated the script to Bahasa Malaysia, casted local actors and actress, and shot it in Malaysia.
“I believe it is important to show the world what Malaysia has to offer, so when the foreign filmmakers experience it first-hand, it will attract them to come back and work together with us naturally for their next project. Educating them on Malaysian quality is the key for future co-production and collaboration,” said Ella.
Speaking of her upcoming project, the promising producer is planning to produce a full length feature film in 2017 under her production company, Buffalo Orange Production Sdn Bhd.
