Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh visited the Content Malaysia Pitching Centre yesterday to discuss further on how she can collaborate with FINAS in developing the Malaysian film industry, with Dato' Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS.
"It is very important for our Malaysian film industry to develop well. Hence, we have built the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios (PIMS), a state-of-the art studio in Johor that is not just to satisfy the local region but international as well. Such cutting edge facilities will bring in more productions, thus empowering local talents, filmmakers, and generate employment opportunities which in turn help to develop our film industry as a whole," said Tan Sri Michelle, who is also a member of the Board of Directors of PIMS.
"Besides the studio, we also have the locations, the landscapes, and most importantly the talents, and we need to build on that a lot more," she added.
As for Dato' Kamil Othman, he reiterated, "In terms of the foundation, we definitely have it. So now it is time to bring it up a few notches higher because I think we have been on the learning curve for the past few years, and now we are ready to see where we should be putting our focus on. Right now we have a good chance to go for the jugular, especially by collaborating with Tan Sri Michelle who has the experience, network, and talent to help in enhancing the industry."
Furthermore, Dato' Kamil suggested that we focus more on developing the visual effects, not just the film itself, as (international) post-production can also be done here in Malaysia. Stating the latest Marvel flick, Deadpool as an example, he said the film was made in one country but the visual effects were developed all over the world because of the incentives.
Speaking of her latest project, Tan Sri Michelle will be debuting a sequel to the critically acclaimed and award winning film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,' titled 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny' on 26th February 2016 exclusively on Netflix.
