“The Kid From the Big Apple is a great example of a good nationalistic film," said Dato’ Khusairi Abdul Talib, Chairman of FINAS on the internationally award-winning film during its gala premiere on 3rd March 2016.

Dato’ Khusairi also applauded the movie for gaining recognition in numerous international award festivals, subsequently introducing Malaysia and the national identity to the world stage.

"The director has done a good job not only in directing the movie, but also ensuring that she does not neglect the elements of Malaysian culture and identity in the movie, which made the movie unique and true to its audience," he continued.

The chairman also voiced his hopes for more films of such values to be produced by the local filmmakers in the future, stating that FINAS will always be open to the idea of funding such films. Moreover, FINAS is looking for more films with nationalistic values to enter the international market.

"We have a lot of unique cultural values here in Malaysia that we would like to introduce to the international audience, and I think that films are one of the most effective ways to do it. We wish to keep supporting our local creative talents to produce high quality films that feature these values through our various filming funds," added the Chairman.

Set to be screened on 10th March 2016 in Malaysia, The Kid from the Big Apple is a light-hearted film about a 12-year-old girl who forms an unlikely bond with her estranged grandfather despite their cultural and generational differences. Filmed wholly in Malaysia, The Kid from the Big Apple highlights the rich local culture and tradition that is uniquely Malaysian.
