Southeast Asia's leading Internet TV service provider, iflix embarked on a hackathon series to bring one of its most popular first run exclusives, Mr. Robot experience to life. The ‘Hacked by Mr. Robot’ campaign was carried out in three waves; hackathon, ATL and online from 16th to 22nd September 2016.
The first wave kicked off with a 24-hour hackathon; that was packed with insightful and invaluable exposure with iflix’s most talented and renowned tech developers providing guidance and mentorship to 12 teams of young developers. Dubbed as ‘Sieze Ctrl,’ the hackathon designed to have coders dig deep into the iflix systems and application, and find ways to improve, create, evolve or takeover features and functionalities within the iflix service. The winning team, The Hackbots, took away the top cash prize of RM5,000 for their development of “Campaigns,” an in-app feature that allows users to crowdsource opinions and votes for movies and TV shows they want to watch.
Held with the objective to extend their viewers’ engagement beyond the screen, the second wave of the campaign included the ‘hack’ and takeover of digital billboards across Klang Valley, in conjunction with Mr. Robot’s two part season 2 finale. Furthermore, the campaign has successfully taken over the social media where hundreds of iflix followers switched their profile photos to the ‘Hack by Mr. Robot’ logo. The online campaign was also joined by local celebrities including Sazzy Falak, Jehan Miskin and Vince Chong.
"We’re obsessively focused on customer experience and embarked on the ‘Hack by Mr. Robot’ campaign to further reach out to our viewers. The idea behind the hackathon is to create value not only for iflix but also, like Mr. Robot, we’re cultivating future thinkers and innovators in growing with experience. Moreover, both ATL and online hacks were inspired by the show itself as we wanted to bring “this world out to the public”," said Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of iflix Malaysia.
Mr. Robot is an Emmy award winning series about a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. Soon, he finds himself at a crossroad when a mysterious leader of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the corporation he is paid to protect.
