Zulaikha Zakaria’s short film, Suraya won the ‘Best Film’ award at the second Asian Youth Indie Film Festival 2016 (AYYIF), held at Universiti Utara Malaysia on 8th October 2016.

Suraya, which also garnered the ‘Best Narrative’ award, tells the story of a conflict between a ballet dancer and her conservative mother, after she was chosen to perform in a show titled ‘Adam and Eve.’

Speaking of the inspiration behind her award-winning short film, Zulaikha revealed, “It is a story of a girl who balances her religion and passion on the tip of her toes. Truth be told, if we were to change the title, it could be the name of anyone of us because we've all been there; bold enough to even think we can have too much in our plates.”

The film’s producer, Ikhlas Khaled Novel Ngadimin, who accepted the awards on stage said, “Suraya is more than just a final year project. We plan on sending this short film to various locals and internationals film festivals; for competitions and also screenings.”

Keeping with the theme of ‘Unleashing Creative Confidence on Global Humanity,’ the Asian Youth Indie Film Festival aimed to recognize and reward the work of Asian students and indie artists through film and animation festivals, and to encourage students and young indie filmmakers to produce high quality creative works, among others.

The festival was launched by the Deputy Higher Education Minister, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching and this year, more than 60 local and foreign students participated in the festival including students from the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.
