In conjunction with Iskandar Malaysia's 10th Anniversary this year, Iskandar Malaysia Studios and Iskandar Regional Development Authority are organising the inaugural Iskandar Malaysia Shorties Competition (IM Shorties 2016), which opens to all aspiring filmmakers with less than 3 years of professional experience, including secondary school students.
Themed ‘Experience Iskandar Malaysia,’ the competition is a designated platform for emerging talents to develop and present their creativity, stories, hopes and views. Besides the opportunity to win RM20,000 cash, the winning or high potential films and talents would be exposed to other avenues then, be it showcases at international festivals, talent development, employment, collaborations and or funding opportunity.
Supported by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), Johor State Film Commissioner, The Iskandarian newspaper, and Multimedia University (MMU), the competition also encourages aspiring filmmakers to cover topics, events, or stories that overlap with social, economics, and environmental elements.
In addition to the competition, the organisers are also coordinating a free ‘48 Hour Guerilla Filmmaking Workshop’ to guide participants on the film making process, brainstorm on story development and creative story boards to ultimately result in the participants producing short films for the IM Shorties 2016 competition.
Submission is open until 15th January 2017, and the submitted film must not be more than 10 minutes including credit.
