The first Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFEST) and Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) unveiled over 20 international and regional films as the festival’s screening lineup and films in competition. The announcement was made today by Ms. Joanne Goh, Chairman of MIFFEST and MGGA at TGV Sunway Velocity, Kuala Lumpur.
The festival will open with a 2017 German film, Timm Thaler by award-winning director, Andreas Dresen, and will close with a Japanese drama film, Harmonium directed by Koji Fukada. In addition, the festival will also host Special Screening, featuring three films; Redha (Malaysia), Blind Way (China) and After This Our Exile (Hong Kong).
The nominated films in competition also include Malaysia’s Interchange and Malaysia-Philippines film, Singing in Graveyards by Malaysian director, Bradley Liew who is nominated for Best New Director award. Interchange is nominated in three categories; Best Screenplay (Redza Minhat and Dain Said), Best Cinematography (Jordan Chiam), and Best Film.
As the festival aims to recognise human excellence, Joanne Goh revealed, “The award committee seeks films that champions humanity and show commitment to humanitarian efforts, as well as selfless contributions to improve the lives of the people they serve.”
In addition, there will be additional categories to the award, namely The Audience Choice Awards, Lifetime Achievement in Films Award and Friends of Malaysia in Films Award. For the Audience Choice award, the public gets to vote for their favourite film by dropping their movie ticket into the voting box after the screening.
