Malaysia-Taiwan documentary film, Absent Without Leave which won the ‘Audience Choice Award’ at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival last year, is set to premiere online for free for Malaysian audience from 28th February to 5th March 2017.
Directed by Lau Kek-Huat and Chen Jing-Lian, Absent Without Leave follows the history of Lau’s grandfather, a soldier for the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) who lost his life in the 1949 independence movement. In this documentary, Lau delves into his family’s past to unfold his grandfather’s hidden identity.
“The story begins with a man’s portrait, which has been hanging for more than 30 years in an old wooden house where I was born and grew up in Perak, Malaysia. Eventually I found out that he is my grandfather, who sacrificed his life fighting for Malaysia’s independence and decolonization, but his and his comrades’ stories are excluded from history. This documentary sets out to unveil the mysteries,” said Lau.
Produced by Taiwan-based HummingBird Production, Absent Without Leave, which is a debut feature documentary by Lau took him five years to make, with a budget of RM80,000.
To-date, the documentary has participated in several international festivals and will compete in the upcoming 22nd Busan International Film Festival under the ‘Documentary Competition’ in October 2017.
