The National Art Gallery announced the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Biennale (KL Biennale) 2017 and will be held from 1st November 2017 until 31st March 2018, at multiple sites in Kuala Lumpur.

Centering the stories of BELAS or ‘Be Loved’ as its theme, the specially-curate exhibition recognises, embraces and echoes societal values. The works include – Belas Alam (love for nature), Belas Warisan (love for heritage), Belas Insan (love for people), Belas Haiwan (love for animal), and Belasungkawa (love for our legendary icons).

“Biennale refers to bi-annually in latin. This is a mega scale contemporary arts programme with international recognition organized by our National Art Gallery,” said Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Najib Ahmad Dawa, Director General of National Art Gallery Development Board.

Presenting a stellar line up of artists from Southeast Asia, China, South Korea, Japan and India, the artists are set to showcase their artworks to Malaysians and visitors. The exhibition will be a highlight in the city’s cultural calendar and poised to attract more than 250,000 visitors over the five-month exhibition period.

Johan Ishak, Chairman of KL Biennale commented: “KL Biennale will change our way in experiencing art. Not to revere, but to rejoice in the narrative presented by unsung heroes, conservationists, architects, art activists, practitioners and various other personalities.”

The exhibition will also feature charity and community based projects, workshops with social activists, artists, academics and curators, and international dialogue on contemporary art.
