The highly-anticipated Festival Filem Malaysia (FFM) 29, which took place on September 23, 2017 at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), saw Adiwiraku nabbing the coveted Best Film award, beating rival films Redha, Interchange, Hanyut and Desolasi.
Directed by Eric Ong, the fully Malay-language film depicts teacher Cheryl Ann Fernando's true story of coaching a high school choral speaking team to winning the competition back in 2015, despite each member facing obstacles and challenges along the way.
The film, released on March 9, stars Sangeeta Krishnasamy as Cikgu Cheryl, Xavier Fong as Cikgu Constant, Wan Azlyn as Alia, Farra Safwan as Kemboja, Ahmad Adnin Zidane as Zidane, Irdina Tasmin as Irdina, Balqis Sani as Balqis and Rizal Fahmi as Rizal.
Adiwiraku also managed to grab two other awards during this year’s film festival – Tamil drama actress Sangeeta Krishnasamy was awarded the Best Actress title while Jason Chong, the executive producer, won the award for Best Original Story.

Meanwhile, Syafiq Yusof’s Abang Long Fadil 2, produced by Skop Production Sdn Bhd and Astro Shaw Sdn Bhd, won the Box Office award with a total collection of RM17.3 million.
This year, the annual film festival did not make a preliminary announcement of the top five nominations for each of the categories being contested. According to the organisers, this was done on purpose to avoid any controversy and with the hopes that all artistes will be present on the event day to see for themselves if their work makes it into the “Top 5.”
The two-hour event, hosted by comedian Zizan Razak, actresses Nabila Huda and Thanuja Ananthan as well as singer Elizabeth Tan, was graced by over 3,000 attendees. Themed “Transformasi Citra Karya,” FFM29 saw 53 films competing for 24 awards on the pinnacle night for industry players which was broadcasted live via Astro Ria and Astro Ria HD.
FFM29 was organised by the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) and attended by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, his wife Datin Seri Raya Erom, Ministry secretary general Tan Sri Dr. Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad, FINAS chairman Dato’ Mohd Khusairi Talib and FINAS director general Dato’ Fauzi Ayob.
