The team behind Ayat-Ayat Cinta thrilled Malaysian fans with the official gala premiere of its highly anticipated sequel on January 8 at Golden Screen Cinemas Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. This marks an entire decade since the box office film returns to the silver screens.
The event garnered over 500 attendees, made up of invited guests, casts of AAC, local celebrities as well as select media representatives, who were treated to an exclusive, by-invitation-only, screening of Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 (AAC2).
Produced by MD Pictures based on the sensational novel by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, AAC2 depicts the sombre love story of university lecturer and entrepreneur Fahri Abdullah. He is left to live alone in Edinburgh, Scotland following his wife Aisha’s disappearance during her tenure as a volunteer in Gaza. Although Fahri is accompanied by his Turkish assistant Hulusi, he faces a difficult time in overcoming his grief. That said, the pious Fahri refrains from letting his emotions interfere in his character’s integrity throughout the film.
The plot thickens when Aisha’s cousin Hulya, who has feelings for Fahri, arrives at Edinburgh. In time, the love between Fahri and Hulya becomes evident. This leaves Fahri stuck between a rock and a hard place when he has to decide whether he is ready to move on from his relationship with Aisha and open his heart to accept Hulya’s love.
AAC2, directed by Guntur Soehardjanto, ventures into rarely touched issues pertaining to Islam and paints a vivid picture of humanity at its best and worst. The film features Indonesian casts such as Fedi Nuril, Pandji Pragiwaksono, Tatjana Saphira, Chelsea Islan and Dewi Sandra alongside well-known Malaysian stars Nur Fazura and Bront Palarae.
According to producer Manoj Punjabi, Fazura and Bront were casted as they are competent actors that added great value to the film. He also added , “With these renowned local actors on-board, Malaysians would be able to form a sense of belongingness to the film and, simultaneously, elevate it to become a super box office film.”
Despite the film garnering mix reactions, AAC2’s strong suits stands to be its top notch cast line as well as its great cinematography paired with its captivating soundtracks. Over in Indonesia, the film has already hit over 2 million viewers since its release on December 21, 2017.
