Malaysia’s professional badminton player Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei brought pride to Malaysians everywhere when he won his first silver medal back in 2008 – this marked the first time a Malaysian had made it into the men’s singles event. Dubbed the national hero, Lee Chong Wei united Malaysians of all race and creed by repeating this achievement back in 2012 and 2016; making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.

On the cool evening of March 9, Lee Chong Wei, once again, united Malaysians under the roofs of the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur Sports City. This time, a total of 20,000 Malaysians along with a handful of China nationals congregated to catch the highly anticipated Lee Chong Wei: Rise of the Legend movie.

Decked with a special-built giant 40 metre x 17 metre LED screen, the national stadium was transformed into a mega cinema for the World Premiere of Lee Chong Wei Extended Version 133 minutes. This was so remarkable that it etched its way into the Asia Book of Records as well as The Malaysia Book of Records as the largest movie premiere ever held in the whole of Asia.

The eventful evening kicked off with a red carpet walk to mark the opening of the world premiere. Audiences witnessed Lee Chong Wei and wife Wong Mew Choo along with their two boys Kingston and Terrance, cast members, guests, as well as celebrities making their entrance accompanied by rousing ovations.

Youth and Sports Minister YB Khairy Jamaluddin also graced the event alongside Badminton Association of Malaysia President Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria and the Sidek brothers: Misbun, Jalani and Rahman.

YB Khairy Jamaluddin exclaimed, “Lee Chong Wei is a true inspiration to all Malaysians and his story will inspire generations to come. It is his hard work, sacrifice and determination that has made him the best and tonight, we’re celebrating a true Malaysian hero!”

This was followed by a chat session with the movie producers Josiah Chieng, Ben Lee and Tony Hu, as well as director Teng Bee and the national badminton icon as well. The event also saw Akademi Fantasia 2013 contestant Nabila Razali and YouTube star Priscilla Abby taking the stage to showcase the theme song of the movie for the very first time.

The official screening of the movie took place right after an enthusiastic recital of the Negaraku. Lee Chong Wei: Rise of the Legend depicts the emotional tale of the Malaysian badminton star’s life right from his struggling childhood up till the historic day where he defeated China’s Lin Dan during the 2005 Malaysia Open Final.

Fans who missed the world premiere can catch the theatrical cut of Lee Chong Wei: Rise of the Legend when it hits cinemas nationwide on March 15.
