Dato' Yusof Haslam, Managing Director of Skop Productions launching 'Mahathir: The Journey' with Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan, Co-Director
Another film that focuses on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will go into production next month. Titled ‘Mahathir: The Journey’, it is said to depict his 16 years from the time Dr Mahathir opted to retire from his post as Malaysia’s Prime Minister to when he took the same post again after last year’s election. This film announcement comes after the release of the documentary ‘M For Malaysia’, out in September, and ‘Hasmah’, a biopic on Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, which is in preproduction stage.

In his speech during ‘Mahathir: The Journey’ launch, co-director Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan said: “The film will showcase aspects about Dr Mahathir’s personal life that many may not be aware of and also the (known) fact that he is a well-respected and outspoken leader.”

Hatta stated: “For the past seven months, we have been doing the pre-production works, and developing the script. It had gone through 12 rewrites. "We finally got 100% approval from the PM’s office." The director mentioned that while the events in the films are based on real moments, he will exercise some forms of creative license for dramatic purposes of storytelling.
The stars of 'Mahathir: The Journey' are: Azhar Amir as Dr Mahathir, Fauziah Latiff as Dr Siti Hasmah, Ning Baizura as Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, Hilal Azman as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Dian P. Ramlee as Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Lisdawati as Nurul Izzah.
“We plan to release ‘Mahathir: The Journey’ in July next year, closer to Dr Mahathir’s 95th birthday, ” continued Hatta, estimating the film’s budget to be at RM 6mil. Helmed by Hatta and Chan Wai Cheong, the film is set to star Azhar Amir as Dr Mahathir, Fauziah Latiff as Dr Siti Hasmah, Ning Baizura as Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, Hilal Azman as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Dian P. Ramlee as Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Lisdawati as Nurul Izzah. All the chosen actors were called in for an audition before final decision was reached. Hatta believes that the final cast members will only give their best, something that was echoed by the actors as well.
