12th PROFIMA Awards

Skop Production Sdn Bhd secured 7 winning categories through their feature film title, ‘Munafik 2’ at the 12th Edition of the PROFIMA Awards (Anugerah PROFIMA 2019), while Les’ Copaque Production swept all animation categories last night (13 December 2019). The annual awards, which was held at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), was graced by YB Dato’ Wira Mahfuz Omar, Deputy Minister of Human Resources, and with the presence of Captain Khir Mohd Noor (President of PROFIMA), Dato’ Seri Jessy Lai (CEO & Executive Director of Mon Space), Mr Zaki bin Haji Abdul Rahim (Chief of Jury of the awards), Dato’ Jurey Latiff Mohd Rosli (President of PTVM), Dato’ Kamil Othman (Former Director General of FINAS), Dato’ Yusof Haslam (Managing Director of Skop Production Sdn Bhd), etc. The awards, themed “Beyond the Screen”, saw 45 awards presented to the cast and crew of films screened between Jan 1 last year and Sept 30 this year.

Spiritual horror film - ‘Munafik 2’, which earlier in the year achieved an all-time top box office sales record of RM 48 million, impressed juries in various categories, namely Best Art Direction; Best Cinematography; Best Director; Best Film Editing; Best Original Score (Courtesy of Supernova Media); Best Sound Design (Courtesy of Supernova Media) and Best Special Effects (Courtesy of Viper Studio). ‘Munafik 2’, directed & starred by Syamsul Yusof, was screened in September last Year, which became the first Malay film to have grossed RM 40 million at the box office after 17 days of screening. Screened in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia, it saw Syamsul reprise his role as spiritual healer Ustaz Adam and battle a ruthless cult leader Abu Ja played by Nasir Bilal Khan.

Amongst the other top films recognized with awards were ‘Hantu Kak Limah’ with 4 awards; Telemovie Champ – ‘Jongkok’ with 5 awards; ‘Police Evo 2’ with 3 awards; and ‘Pulang’ and ‘Pascal’ with 2 awards each.

Meanwhile, Les’ Copaque Production, the creator of Upin & Ipin, continued to carry their high status, reputation and ranks by sweeping both animation categories with a win for Best Animated Feature Film through ‘Upin Ipin – Keris Siamang Tunggal’ and Best Animated TV Series through ‘Pada Zaman Dahulu’.

Special Honorary Recognitions from PROFIMA were also given to Dr Megat Al Imran bin Yasin, Mahendran A. Appathurai and Tan Heng Yuen for their contributions to the industry for the past decade.

Persatuan Pekerja Profesional Filem Malaysia (PROFIMA), led by Captain Khir Mohd Noor, will continue to organize the PROFIMA Awards with a tribute to recognizing local and foreign actors, directors as well as those who work tirelessly behind the scenes. The awards will also aim to promote potential careers in the industry and raise awareness of film education among the younger generation, especially those with interest in audio-visual recording and information technology.
