Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) today officially awarded the Corporate Zakat Contribution Certificate (Sijil Pengiktirafan Pembayar Zakat Korporat) to Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd, the operator of McDonald’s Malaysia. Gerbang Alaf Restaurants have been a Zakat contributor since 2017, and from this day onwards, the recognition in the form of a sticker and a certificate will be displayed in 94 McDonald’s restaurants in the state of Selangor.

“This Corporate Zakat Contribution Certificate is a proud initiative of Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) to express our appreciation and acknowledge companies that have paid and contributed its dues within Selangor. It also serves as a tribute for companies to perform their zakat responsibilities to consolidate corporate social responsibilities and further strengthen humanity together in the ongoing fight against Covid-19. This year, LZS expects the number of financially struggling families to increase up to 80,000 families. Thus, the collection of zakat from contributors in Selangor is crucial to ensure the welfare and necessities of life within Selangor is protected,” said Saipolyazan M. Yusop, CEO of LZS.

The issuance of this certificate of recognition, representing the corporate zakat payers will certainly add value to existing companies that own a Halal certificate. In this regard, the certificate will certainly strengthen the Malaysian confidence in the McDonald’s brand, in the country.

Azhar Darbi, Vice President of Human Resources and Chairman of the internal Halal Committee of McDonald’s Malaysia said, “We are very pleased with the recognition awarded by LZS. Indeed, corporate zakat payment is our ongoing commitment since it was taken over by Reza Group a few years ago. Hopefully, the zakat performed will continue to assist those in need of help in Malaysia, while fulfilling our obligations as Muslims.”

In 2019 alone, McDonald’s Malaysia has paid corporate Zakat by RM 1.4 million for states throughout Malaysia. For the state of Selangor, as much as RM 101,000 corporate zakat has been paid. McDonald’s Malaysia also works closely with the Department of Malaysian Islamic Religious Development (JAKIM) to continue to support its Halal commitments to consumers in all aspects of the business. McDonald’s Malaysia is also involved actively in various Halal programs, including the Malaysian International Halal Exhibition (MIHAS), HALFEST, and World Halal Conference.
