Asthma Malaysia announced the ‘Kawal Lelah Sebelum Parah’ campaign on 22 September 2020 to raise public awareness on Asthma with the aim of empowering asthma patients with knowledge of the best measure to control their condition. The inflammatory disease, Asthma, affects over 339 million people worldwide – 2 million in Malaysia. The presence of Covid-19 is an added concern for asthma patients, as with poorly controlled asthma, patients have a higher risk of complications from the viral infection.

According to Dr. Helmy, although there is no cure for Asthma, it is a condition that can be controlled with good symptom management, usage of reliever medication no more than twice a week, having no nocturnal symptoms and no limitation to normal levels of activity; However, only about 6% of patients achieve good asthma control due to poor adherence.

To address these issues, Asthma Malaysia has partnered with several professional organizations and private entities to educate the public and healthcare professionals on the importance of breaking the chain of Short-Acting Beta2-Agonist (SABA) over-reliance, might result in an increased risk of asthma-related problems. The ‘Kawal Lelah Sebelum Parah’ awareness campaign is one of the pillars of this effort as it focuses on public education and empowering individuals.

As patients are at the heart of what we do, we are fully supportive of the ‘Kawal Lelah Sebelum Parah’ campaign because we believe that this awareness campaign is an effective way to reach out to patients; to help alleviate concerns and provide guidance on managing their asthma.
