‘Lelaki Harapan Dunia’ (Men Who Save the World) was chosen as Malaysia's official submission for the Best Foreign-Language Film Category in the 88th Academy Awards next year.
The film, which won five awards at the 27th Malaysia Film Festival (FFM) such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Story, and more, was chosen by FINAS’ Oscar Selection Committee that was formed recently with the objective to choose the best local film to submit for the Oscar from next year onwards.
Speaking of their submission today, Dato’ Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS reiterated, “At the beginning of the year, I promised amongst other things that FINAS will change its direction to focus on quality rather than quantity, and to position Malaysia cinema to the world. Hence, today we have made our submission for the Oscar. Winning is not our main concern as it is more about telling the world that there is a vibrant Malaysian cinema waiting to tell Malaysian stories to the world.”
The internationally co-produced comedy film had its world premiere at the 67th Locarno International Film Festival and went on to take part in more international film festivals, including 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Taipei Golden Horse International Film Festival and many more. It also won a Special Jury Prize at the 2015 Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran, Iran.
The film producer, Sharon Gan said, “We are very thankful and grateful to FINAS and its Oscar Committee for this great honour. We feel humble but at the same time incredibly proud to have ‘Lelaki Harapan Dunia’ representing Malaysia.”
‘Lelaki Harapan Dunia’ will be Malaysia’s third submission as ‘Puteri Gunung Ledang’ was first submitted for the 78th Academy Awards in 2005, while ‘Bunohan’ was Malaysia’s second submission in 2013. The announcement of the five foreign-language films nominated for the 88th Academy Awards will be made on 14th January 2016.
