Creative Industry Talent Empowerment (CITE) Zone 2016, a collaboration between the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) empowered nation’s future entertainment industry leaders with creative workshops, industry-driven seminars, and Micro Fund pitching sessions.

The four-day programme which concluded yesterday on 12th April 2016, aimed to provide training to students who aspire to enrich the nation's entertainment industry, was participated by a total of 127 students from 16 universities and colleges in Malaysia. The event also brought a remarkable line-up of trainers which consisted of actors and industry veterans such as Aziz M. Osman, Pekin Ibrahim, Habsah Hassan and Cat Farish, to personally mentor the creative talents on film, TV, animation, music, scriptwriting, storyboarding, directing, among others.

Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, Vice Chancellor of UUM sees that the involvement of various educational institutions; including UUM is a healthy move towards achieving the nation's visions, while developing the future leaders' soft skills especially in the creative industry.

"The creative sector has opened up more than 7,000 new job opportunities in recent years and it should not be overlooked as it will contribute to the nation's economy based on the profit and export that it has successfully achieved," said the Vice Chancellor of UUM.

Dato' Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS asserted that CITE Zone was held in alignment with the government's initiatives through KKMM as the leader for the National Creative Industry Policy (DIKN).

"The ministry has set aside RM200 million through its 10th Malaysian Plan (RMK-10) to fund activities related to the creative industry such as film, TV series, animation and local content development. Furthermore, the ministry believes that we can strengthen the creative efforts not just locally but also at the international level. This is encouraging as the programme will bring the world’s attention to our young talents in the creative industry."

CITE Zone that was held in Sintok, Kedah also offered various opportunities to the younger generation to discover and share information, ideas, experiences and expertise related to the creative industry.
