Ramlee Awang Murshid’s bestselling thriller novel, Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba is set to be adapted to the silver screen by two directors; Nasir Jani, who previously directed Kembara Seniman Jalanan and Rozana Cinta 87, and Seth Larney, an Australian director and visual effects specialist whose film credits include Matrix Reloaded, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Superman Returns and others.
Tombiruo tells the story of a troubled young man who is deformed but dutiful and burdened with powers that do not bend to his will. He is also known as a ‘demon’ with the power to harness the very lifeblood of the Keningau Jungle, when he started to seek revenge for his father’s death.
Despite the challenges of selecting key scenes from the 600-page novel ensuring a solid storyline with a unique combination of thrilling actions, dramatic characters and stunning visuals, the two directors work hand-in-hand; Nasir focusing on art direction while Seth concentrates on action scenes and visual effects.
“I believe the storyline in incredible and beautiful yet simple and universal for global audiences to relate to. I’m also thrilled to bring my previous experiences to elevate the film’s quality and at the same time gain new experiences on Malaysian filmmaking,” said Seth Larney.
The action packed film, which boasts award-winning casts led by Zul Ariffin, Farid Kamil, and Nabila Huda marks the first strategic partnership between Astro Shaw, Ideate Media, Grup Buku Karangkraf and Layar Sunan. The film also signifies Ideate Media’s maiden venture into local production.
Ramlee Awang Murshid, the novelist of Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba commented, “I am delighted that Tombiruo has finally made it to the silver screen. There were other offers in the past but I’d rejected them as I have high expectations when it comes to novel adaptations. However, I am confident that Ideate Media, Grup Buku Karangkraf and Astro Shaw will ensure a high quality adaptation with their combined experiences and commitment.”
Tombiruo is expected to hit nationwide cinemas in 2017.
