Two Young Filmmakers to Represent Malaysia at ‘ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator’ in Cambodia

Two young filmmakers, Putri Purnama Sugua and Kathy Tan have been selected to represent Malaysia at the upcoming ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator (FLY2016) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Set to be held from 31st October to 13th November 2016, FLY2016 gathers aspiring filmmakers around ASEAN and Korea to produce two short films in 2 weeks’ time under the supervision and instruction of established Asian filmmakers.
The announcement was made during their recent graduation ceremony from the Next New Wave: Young Filmmakers Workshop 2016, by the Managing Director of Busan Film Commission, Mr. Choi Yoon. Organised by Next New Wave and supported by FINAS, the 8-day workshop not only serve as a selection process for the nation’s representatives, but also acts as a platform to nurture young emerging filmmakers and to encourage Southeast Asian collaborations. 
Alongside 12 other participants, Putri and Kathy’s performances and talents were evaluated by 7 mentors from Southeast Asia including Editing Mentor Isazaly Mohd Isa, Sound Mentor Pete Teo and Assistant Directing Mentor Kenneth Raj.
Dato’ Kamil Othman, Director General of FINAS said, “The Young Filmmakers Workshopis an essential avenue to collaborate with ASEAN filmmakers and subsequently, mould our aspiring filmmakers to produce high quality script and production that could be exported in the future."
Launched in 2012, FLY is organised by the Busan Film Commission (BFC) and the Asian Film Commissions Network (AFCNet), with film industry-supporting agencies in ASEAN member nations take turns each year to co-organise the event in their region.
