Malaysia’s award-winning animation studio, Giggle Garage took home the grand prize at the third ASEAN Character Awards held in Japan last month, for its latest animation Origanimals. The adventure and comedy series won the judges vote over 36 other submissions from all over the world with its unique characters which combined the paper-folding concept of origami with animals.
Juried by the top-notch experts who are well versed with the Japanese content business, Origanimals was selected as the top winner for the annual competition as the design incorporates traditional yet universally common art of paper folding with 3D concept, and the brand empowers its young audience to solve problems with creative ideas.
Broadcasted in 45 countries since April 2016, Origanimals follows four friends, Ryan Rhino, Fiona Fox, Zoe Zebra and Khye Koala known as the ‘Awesome Four’ who make up the ‘Wildlife Rescue Team’ to help others in trouble using problem-solving skills and creative origami solutions. These funky characters live on Planet Origami, a place resembling Earth, except that everything on this planet is made out of paper-like substances.
Zeno Gabing, Executive Director of Giggle Garage revealed that the studio received a complimentary booth at the recent Tokyo Game Show 2016 to showcase their winning IP, as part of the grand prize. He added, “I’m so humbled to receive the award as this means that our show is continuing to be recognised internationally just four months after its first premiere. We also received many praises on the show from character designers to game developers who visited our booth, besides top brand companies who are interested to know more about Origanimals.”
Looking ahead, the studio highlighted that it would like to continue working with diverse companies to expand the brand further in broadcasting, mobile apps and games, as well as licensing agents and merchandising licensees in Asia. In addition, Giggle Garage has also signed a deal with Pelangi Publishing in June to explore offline and online publishing opportunities for the brand, and the studio is set to introduce the IP at the ‘Brand Licensing Europe’ trade show in October to expand its licensing in Latin America, US and Europe.
Previously, Origanimals has garnered the ‘Best Planning Award’ at the Seoul Promotion Plan project Competition in 2012, ‘Gold Award’ at 14th Tokyo Broadcast SystemDigiCon6 in 2012, and ‘Best Animation and Technology Award’ at the NEF-Awani Awards in 2013.
