Malaysia's animation industry veteran, Hassan Muthalib published a book on the country's animation history. Titled From Mouse Deer to Mouse, inspired by the nation’s first animation series, Hikayat Sang Kancil, the book captures the journey of Malaysian animation, starting from its first spark back in 1946 to the present.

The book, which took Hassan 15 years to compile and eight years to write includes chapters such as; Stories that Inspire Animation, Beginnings of Animation in Malaysia, Malaysian Animation Series Gather Stream, and more.

Hassan first came up with the idea for the book in 1990s, when he realised that there is a need for a good academic reference on Malaysian animation. In addition, the book which is published by Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) also includes references to the little-known history of Southeast Asian animation as well as world animation.

"It's my contribution to Malaysian cinema, in particular, the animation industry. It will also be useful for animation students as it's the first book on the history of animation in Malaysia," said the author.

Previously, Hassan had written a chapter on Malaysian animation in his first book, Malaysian Cinema in a Bottle: A Century (and a Bit More) of Wayang which was published in 2013.
