Local animation studio, Netcarbon Sdn Bhd was presented the Silver Medal at the recent Malaysia Technology Expo, held at the Putra World trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur for the inventive innovation of application of new animation technique to produce Supersquad the Movie in 2014.

The new state-of-the-art technology for editing dense motion capture (mocap) data using motion recognition algorithms derived from the field of robotics, was co-developed by Mohd Rashdan Ramlee, CEO and Founder of Netcarbon together with Dr. Musab A. M. Ali from Management and Science University (MSU), and Prof. Dr. Nooritawati Md. Tahir from University Technology MARA (UiTM).

Presented by the Malaysian Association of Research Scientists (MARS), the application had a unique animation pipeline where it used a hybrid mocap or keyframe pipeline. Throughout the production, over 24.3 million motion data points were generated and the new technology allowed the animation studio to produce the movie on time and on budget.

Speaking of the challenge, Mohd Rashdan said: “The challenge is in finding a cost effective way of ensuring error-free mocap data and also ensuring our animators are able to easily access and edit the 6000 data points of mocap data which was generated every minute.” That being said, he added that this is just the first stage for the usage of these motion recognition algorithms and they are working to make it more accessible to end users, as the technology has a potential to make high quality mocap more accessible to smaller budget productions; such as animation and games development.

Supersquad the Movie, which is based on the popular animation series of the same name follows the superhero squad of five children battling an alien invasion in Kuala Lumpur. In 2015, the movie was nominated for ‘Best Animated Picture’ at the 27th Malaysia Film Festival (FFM27) and in 2017, it has secured a distribution partnership with a North American film studio.

Established in 2001, the Malaysia Technology Expo is an invention marketplace connecting inventors and their ideas to investors, manufacturers and distributors in order to promote commercialization and collaboration.
